Mr. Miscavige carries the momentum further still with the annual awarding of IAS Freedom Medal Winners—singular individuals exemplifying the humanitarian ideals of the IAS. Three Scientologists receive the distinguished award as Mr. Miscavige introduces each presentation, bringing to light their personal stories.
Diane Stein, Clearwater, Florida: Dedicated to the goal of eradicating psychiatric abuse, Diane exposed a state law that allowed some 30,000 children a year to be seized by psychiatrists—without parental consent. Her advocacy helped spark the nation’s first Parental Rights Office and rallied state legislators to pass a historic Parents’ Bill of Rights. Inspired by her actions and with her leadership, states across the country advanced 38 similar laws—ultimately safeguarding millions of children from psychiatric abuse. “There were moments when the obstacles felt larger than life.... Yet even then, I never lost sight of why I began—to protect the most vulnerable and make a difference that matters. Tonight this is a victory not just for me, but for all of us!”
Darren Tessitore, Boston, Massachusetts: On a mission to end teen impaired driving, Darren introduced Drug-Free World materials into regional Drivers Ed programs. Recognizing the crisis stretched far beyond his area, he partnered with National School Police, then the Police Athletic and Activities League (PAL). All told, Darren ultimately distributed more than 4 million Truth About Drugs booklets, ensuring 5.5 million students nationwide were empowered with that truth—all while teens driving under the influence decreased 52 percent across the United States. “After 20 years of doing all that I can to reach every kid, it’s amazing to receive this acknowledgment.... As IAS members, it is our duty to make sure we truly help the 8.2 billion people on this planet. And there is no stopping me until we win this battle!”
Nancy Cartwright, Los Angeles, California: Though known to many for her Emmy-winning voice work, she is guided foremost by a humanitarian mission—to uplift youth, strengthen families and help restore decency and honor to communities everywhere. By championing Study Technology, she made reading “cool” for 250,000 learners. Her work bringing The Way to Happiness to 6 million people contributed to a historic drop in local crime, while a citywide campaign of 300 billboards and bus shelters featuring her own artwork awakened parents to the dangers of psychotropic drugs. Altogether, her compassion and commitment have touched 86 million lives worldwide. “I’m driven by the pride and feeling of accomplishment.… Not just putting a band-aid on a situation, but offering up the greatest kind of help there is: Freedom. And that’s why I do what I do.”
The crescendo of unstoppable applause rings throughout the marquee, honoring the three newest Freedom Medal Winners.
Crowning an epic night, Mr. Miscavige previews a new message that will be broadcast to the world. It invites the curious to discover what he described as a fourth dimension of Scientology—the very secret the world has always wondered about.
Stars could be all but imagined overhead as the energy practically lifts the roof off the Grand Marquee and Mr. Miscavige bids the crowd good night.
“We are, indeed, in our age of extraordinary things. But if there’s a lesson to be learned from history, it’s the one that reads: Extraordinary times demand extraordinary deeds—and sometimes you have to take a chance.” —Mr. David Miscavige, ecclesiastical leader of the Scientology religion
The weekend of events rolls on as IAS members attend the Global Salvage Seminar on Saturday, energized by in-depth tactical briefings on the campaigns that promise an even more expansive 12 months ahead across the globe.
The Saint Hill grounds resonate with electricity from the previous night as excited members take time between events to explore the glorious estate.
By Saturday evening, the Grand Marquee transforms into an elegant ballroom for the annual IAS Patrons Ball. Mr. Miscavige begins the night with these words: “Yes, this is the epicenter of our IAS universe, the birthplace of a legacy that forever changed the course of our movement.”
The Black-Tie elegance sets the stage for an evening celebrating the top Patrons, those who embody the very purpose of the IAS.
The evening features an international concert with Grammy Award–winning musician Mark Isham, joined by an ensemble of outstanding performers.
A final standing ovation brings the Charity Concert to its end and a monumental weekend to a close, sending IAS members off to create a better world—in their hometowns and for populations across the planet.
